My name is Leah Johnston and I am a Los Angeles based actor, director and photographic artist.
I grew up in Nova Scotia, Canada where I studied performing since the age of eight. During my years as a student, I competed regionally as both a singer and a dancer, performing in shows throughout the Maritimes such as Anne of Green Gables at the Confederation Centre and The Secret Garden at Neptune Theatre.
I attended NYU’s musical theatre program for four years and received a B.F.A. in Drama. After graduating, I signed with Independent Artists Agency and Authentic Talent Management. I have since been featured in shows such as Gossip Girl, As the World Turns and Bloodletters.
In my free time, I began creating conceptual self-portraits depicting concepts or poems that I had written and uploading them to flickr. My photographic work has since developed into one of my greatest passions and has gone on be exhibited in galleries throughout Los Angeles as well as featured in a variety of publications around the world.
Most recently, I made my directorial debut alongside collaborator Chris Barnett with American Dollhouse- an interactive theatrical exhibit which was showcased at Gallery Godo. What began as merely a photo-series evolved into a full-scale theatrical production which allowed the audience to interact with a life size dollhouse which was constructed within the gallery. Within this dollhouse, a seemingly idyllic family of dolls struggles to maintain their perfect facade amidst their darkest secrets. Haithcoat of the LA Weekly named American Dollhouse, 'one of the most innovative shows in L.A." and went on to say "calling American Dollhouse a play doesn’t do it justice. Barnett and Johnston may be showing us a glimpse of theater’s future" (Read Full Story).
In the coming months, I hope to continue creating as both an artist and an director and expanding my knowledge in the realm of filmmaking. Feel free to browse around and check back for updates. I post more informal updates on my Facebook, Flickr and Twitter as well. Thank-you for your interest!
